Demonstration staged against increase in yarn price

Special Correspondent

SALEM: Members of Salem Federation of All Fabric Manufacturers' Associations and Tamil Nadu Small Powerloom Export Cloth Manufacturers Seva Sammelan staged a demonstration here on Saturday on the second day of the two-day weavers' strike to protest against the steep increase in yarn price.

Those involved in the industry of yarn dyed woven fabrics – Salem's special industry with a turnover of Rs. 2,000 crore per annum and manufacturers and exporters of value added garments made from yarn dyed fabrics which records Rs. 400 crore turnover, were facing bleak future. Of late the industry had been facing various problems and the lifting of ban on cotton export had aggravated the same, it was pointed out by protestors.

This would lead to starvation of thousands who were engaged in the industry in and around Salem and power and handloom workers in Salem and Namakkal districts.

They insisted that besides banning cotton export, the procurement and distribution of cotton should be made through Cotton Corporation of India.

The Union government apart from modernizing the NTC mills also should take up the same programme to re-open the sick and closed government controlled co-operative spinning mills allocating necessary funds so that the availability of cotton yarn could be made available to all power and handloom units.

They wanted that cotton and cotton yarn should be declared under the Essential Commodities Act.
