Changes likely in higher education

Aim is to create good academic atmosphere, says Acharya
|
Udupi: V.S. Acharya, Minister for Higher Education, said on Saturday that the Government would strive to create a good academic atmosphere in institutions of higher learning in the State.
Addressing presspersons here, Dr. Acharya said that the Government wanted to fine-tune the higher education sector by bring in qualitative changes in the institutions. Whatever the Knowledge Commission recommends would be implemented as and when they came, without waiting for the final report, he said.
A fair evaluation of educational institutions would be undertaken to help students. Importance would be given to skill-based development, he said and added that he would hold a meeting with the heads of his department, collegiate education and technical education in October to address problem areas.
The State was yet to get many facilities from the University Grants Commission (UGC) and the Union Government. The Government had decided to open an agricultural college with emphasis on horticulture at Brahmavar. It had already released Rs. 5 crore for this purpose. This college would start functioning from the next academic year 2011-12.
