Another tiger in critical condition at BBP

Staff Reporter

Bangalore: While many of the 16 ailing tigers at the Bannerghatta Biological Park appear to be recovering, a four-year-old tiger, Minchu, is in “very critical condition”, said BBP executive director Milo Tago in a press statement here on Saturday.

Minchu is the sibling of the young tiger Divya that died of salmonella infection earlier this month. A week ago, the zoo saw the fifth death among big cats this month — a month-old tiger cub — also from bacterial infection.

While Minchu is now suffering from kidney damage, another white tiger Arya is suffering from liver damage owing to the infection.

Senior veterinarian G. Pampapathi has examined the cats and has suggested a better way of administering medicines intravenously, the statement added.

16 tigers affected

A total of 16 tigers showing symptoms of bacterial infection are under treatment. These include 10 adult tigers: Annu, Minchu, Inchara, Gowri, Arya, Raja, Rani, Kalpana,Yashoda, Lava, Amar; and five cubs.

The tigers are being administered a broad-spectrum antibiotic, the only drug among 30 tested that has proven effective against this particularly virulent strain of bacteria.

On Friday, Minister for Forests C.H. Vijayashankar visited the Bannerghatta Biological Park.
