Currency racket busted

Staff Reporter

NEW DELHI: Three persons have been arrested by the South Delhi Police for allegedly printing and circulating fake Indian currency in the Capital and neighbouring areas.

Acting on a tip-off, the police team sent a decoy customer to the gang members present in a fruit and vegetables market in Kotla Mubarakpur recently and arrested the accused after the deal to supply fake currency was struck. The accused were later identified as Shakeel Ahmed (45), Shankar Singh (35) and Rahul Pal (24).

The police claim to have seized Rs.1.6 lakh in fake currency from them. The notes are of Rs.1,000, Rs.500 and Rs.100 denomination. Besides a computer system, two printers-cum-scanners, six ink cartridges and stamps are also seized, the police said. The police claimed that gang leader Shakeel provided logistics and equipment, Shankar scanned and printed the fake notes, and Rahul searched for unsuspecting victims. The gang used to circulate the fake currency among small-time traders in local markets to avoid attracting attention of the police. The gang also kept changing the markets for circulation of fake currency.

Shakeel came in contact with Rahul while the two were in Tihar Jail in 2008. Rahul joined Shakeel in running the gang on being released.

Shakeel and Shankar are residents of Sangam Vihar. Rahul belongs to Bihar.

The police said the gang members made huge wealth through the printing and circulation of fake currency.
