Development:Legislative Council Chairman D.H. Shankaramurthy reviewing work at the construction site of the Government Ayurvedic Hospital in Shimoga on Saturday. SHIMOGA: Legislative Council Chairman D.H. Shankarmurthy said that efforts were being made to start the Government Ayurvedic College in Shimoga from the current academic year itself. Mr. Shankarmuthy, who has taken personal interest in getting the college sanctioned for Shimoga, was talking to presspersons here on Saturday after visiting the construction site. He said the construction of the college building was expected to be completed in about 15 days. Shifted He said that the ayurvedic hospital, which was proposed to be constructed at a cost of Rs. 50 lakh on the premises of McGann Hospital, had to be shifted to the present site in front of the Circuit House to pave the way for the construction of the Shimoga Institute of Medical Sciences (SIMS). Estimate Mr. Shankarmurthy said that the ayurvedic hospital building was being constructed at a revised estimate of Rs. 2 crore. However, the total cost had already touched Rs.3.30 crore and the Government had so far released Rs. 2.50 crore. The hospital was originally estimated to have 60 beds, but it was subsequently raised to 100 after it was converted into a teaching hospital. He said it was planned to construct two more storeys to add 100 more beds and set up infrastructure for the classrooms. Herbal garden Mr. Shankarmurthy said that the Government had agreed to allot 100 acres at the nearby Agasavalli to raise a herbal garden and set up a research and production centre of the proposed ayurvedic college. He said that the land behind the ayurvedic hospital was proposed to be utilised for setting up an ayurvedic college and staff quarters at an estimated cost of Rs. six crore. The ayurvedic college would be located in a private building till its own building was ready, he added. Recruitment He said that teaching staff for the college would be recruited through direct interview and students selected on a merit basis.
