Panchayat president held for brewing arrack
Staff Reporter
VANIYAMBADI: A panchayat president was arrested on Saturday for brewing illicit liquor in and around Madhakadappa in Vaniyambadi taluk limit.
A team headed by ADSP of Prohibition and Enforcement Wing (PEW) Manivannan, along with Inspector of Vaniyambadi P.E.W. Kamarajan and other police personnel, raided a mini godown at Velathikamani Benda here.
They found jaggery in 147 gunny bags, each weighing 40 kg, amounting to a total of 5,880 kg and 110 litres of arrack in two lorry tubes stored at the rear of the godown.
They arrested Madhakadappa Panchayat president Muniratham (45) for being involved in the brewing.
The police said he purchased jaggery in wholesale from various places in Vaniyambadi, including Devarajapuram, Velathikamani Benda and Madhakadappa, and supplied to bootleggers.
