A weightlifting record by humanoid robot

JAIPUR: A humanoid designed by BITS Pilani students performed a feat at the recent FIRA Robot World Cup and Congress by lifting a weight of 40 CDs, which is a world record.  Humanoid AcYut 4 was given a special award by the FIRA World Cup, held in Bangalore during September 15-19, for setting the world record in weightlifting in the large-sized category.

AcYut 4, with 98 cm height and 7.2 kg weight, is autonomous and has been a major improvement on its earlier model, AcYut 3, which is semi-autonomous.  In the weightlifting competition at the 15 {+t} {+h} FIRA Robot World Cup, the robot was given the task to lift the weight to a particular height and move 40 cm and then to lift the weight 15 cm higher than the previous position and move another 40 cm to successfully finish the task. While all these tasks had to be completed in two minutes, AcYut 4 performed them in 1 minute 40 seconds to receive repeated applause from the spectators.

The event was organised by the Federation of International Robot Soccer Association (FIRA). The AcYut team was represented by BITS students Akash Gupta, Sushma Vallabhaneni, Tushar Agrawal, Roshan Maheshwari and Ankit Kulshreshtra.  Team mentor was Samay Kohli.

Besides lifting weights, AcYut 4 can take pictures using its camera. For instance, while playing football, AcYut can play the ball, take pictures and kick it to the goal by orienting itself towards the goal. It can do live balancing by measuring accelerations in six directions and magnetic fields in three directions. After a fall it can get up on its own by sensing the direction of the gravity.

Speaking on the future improvements, team leader Mr. Akash Gupta said: “In future, the image processing algorithms will be more accurate and walking gaits will be more balanced and human like. We are planning to implement stereo vision for better sensing of environment and force/torque sensors for better balancing. With these improvements, the robot will be able to enhance its ability to distinguish different colours and also walk more human-like besides recognising the height and depth of the floor level”.
