Health and hygiene: Students cleaning up the Velankanni Beach as part of a cleanup programme on Saturday. NAGAPATTINAM: Massive coastal cleanup campaign marked the commemoration of International Coastal Cleanup Day (ICCD) here in the district on Saturday. Colleges and organisations pitched in to clean up the beaches in patches from Velankanni, Nagore, Nagapattinam and Tharangambadi. E.G.S.Pillay College of Arts and Science spearheaded the campaign from Velankanni and Nagore up to Nagapattinam new beach. Similarly, TBML College, Porayar covered the stretch from Poompuhar to Tranquebar. Speaking to The Hindu, Kaladharan, Principal, EGS Pillay College of Arts and Science, also the co-ordinator of ICCD in Nagapattinam, said, “We covered about 16 km. The drive commenced at 7.30 a.m. in Velankanni, and at 8.30a.m. from Nagore.” The few hours of token-clean-up had a mound of garbage . “About 5,000 kg of garbage, 800 kg of plastics; and marine wastes, electronic wastes, two carcasses of dogs and a jelly fish were amid the cleared up wastes,” Mr.Kaladharan said. “Villagers along the way were very helpful”, added Mr.Kaladharan. Along the Karaikal stretch, Karaikal Marg Port took up the exercise with its resources. Nearly 25 students of A.D.J.Polytechnic expressed their solidarity and picking up garbage even without being part of the campaign. The Indian Maritime Foundation has been spearheading the ICCD since 2003 in India.
