Divya Ajith Kumar 
Divya Ajith Kumar had two choices; she made one good, brave decision. “I made the decision to accept a Short Service Commission in the Army because I found that my personality was suited for the defence services,” says Lieutenant Divya. The first woman to receive the coveted ‘Sword of Honour', awarded to the best cadet of Officers Training Academy, St.Thomas Mount, at the passing out parade, spoke to Aloysius Xavier Lopez. She was one of the 244 cadets, including 63 women, who were inducted into the Indian Army recently on completion of their training at OTA. “Better communication and time management skills are some of my strengths. This will help me in being a good leader,” says Lieutenant Divya. She will soon be leaving for one of the toughest terrains in the country to carry out her duty as a Lieutenant in the Army. She would be serving the country as a commissioned officer for at least 10 years. “After the Short Service Commission, I will opt for a career in management,” she adds. Her inspiration to join the army was the disciplined life of NCC officers. She joined the NCC during the second year of her Bachelor's in Commerce. She wanted either to join the armed forces on Short Service Commission or become a civil servant after completing her graduation. She joined the OTA by appearing for the Combined Defence Service Examination. The preparation for the CDS was easy. “I focussed on revising my Science, History and Geography in school books and updating the knowledge in current affairs,” she adds. “A wonderful moment” “The most wonderful moment in life for me was when I stepped into the OTA for the first time,” Lieutenant Divya says. “The uniform, respect and responsibilities of a commissioned officer are much more than anything else,” she adds. She says her efforts as a commissioned officer in the coming years would be towards sustaining her belief.
