It was heartbreaking to see the picture of a dead elephant (“Jairam to meet Railway officials on jumbo deaths”, Sept. 25). While it is futile to say that the tragedy could have been averted, the tracks could have been fenced off. Deepa Nagaraj, Bangalore The pressures of expanding human habitation will only lead to more accidents like this. There doesn't seem to be enough forest area for wild animals to live in. The future of these species looks grim. D. Kishan Prasad Rao, Karimnagar This incident can be treated as an criminal offence as it was brutality shown towards innocent animals. Dozens of elephants have died in India in recent years after being struck while crossing railway tracks that often run through national parks and forests. Sanjeev Kumar, Bhagalpur Apart from the measures listed in the report, the Railways can think of constructing elevated railway tracks in such vulnerable areas.
