Tragedy in Bengal

It was heartbreaking to see the picture of a dead elephant (“Jairam to meet Railway officials on jumbo deaths”, Sept. 25). While it is futile to say that the tragedy could have been averted, the tracks could have been fenced off.

The pressures of expanding human habitation will only lead to more accidents like this. There doesn't seem to be enough forest area for wild animals to live in. The future of these species looks grim.

This incident can be treated as an criminal offence as it was brutality shown towards innocent animals. Dozens of elephants have died in India in recent years after being struck while crossing railway tracks that often run through national parks and forests.

Apart from the measures listed in the report, the Railways can think of constructing elevated railway tracks in such vulnerable areas. There must also be carefully selected animal corridors in the various forest zones to allow wild animals safe passage.
