CHENNAI: The expansion of the Chennai airport has got a fillip with the defence authorities agreeing to hand over an old transmitter tower to Airport Authorities of India (AAI). The defence authorities will shift to the new, spacious building constructed by the AAI. CPI (M) MP T.K. Rangarajan, who facilitated an agreement between the two authorities by making a representation to Defence Minister A.K. Antony, said the dispute of handing over the transmitter tower along with some portion of land was pending for more than two years, though there was an agreement between the two. As per the agreement, the defence authorities should hand over 21 acres of land and the State government would compensate it by allotting land with equal value. It was left to the AAI to bear the cost for shifting and erection of the communication network. Mr. Rangarajan said that when defence authorities were reluctant to hand over the land, he wrote to Mr. Antony in October 2009, asking him to prevail upon his officials to abide by the agreement. He once again wrote to him in August 2010, seeking his effective intervention, as the expansion of the airport could not be delayed further. Mr. Rangarajan said now defence authorities had decided to vacate the land.
