Prannoy, Thulasi triumph

KOCHI: H.S. Prannoy, the Youth Olympics silver medallist, defeated the top-seeded Bennet Antony 21-9, 20-22, 21-16 to win his maiden men's singles title at the Seshasayee Kerala State badminton championship here on Sunday evening.

Despite being one of India's most promising young players, Prannoy was unseeded here for he did not play the State's lone ranking senior tournament this year – the TKV memorial event in Thiruvananthapuram – which came close to the Youth Olympics.

Prannoy draws

big crowd

Prannoy's presence brought a big crowd to the FACT Udyogamandal Club and he didn't disappoint despite being taken to three sets by Bennet.

State junior champion Daya Elsa Jacob also forced the top-seeded P.C. Thulasi, a former senior national runner-up, to slog for the women's title by taking the opening game. And then, Ernakulam brothers Markose Bristow and Jaison Bristow upset Kozhikode's top-seeded young pair of Ram C. Vijay and Sunjith to take the men's doubles title.

Markose and Jaison, both national stars in their heyday, were pairing up after nearly a decade. But they came up with some stunning stuff, almost as if playing from memory.

S. Venkatakrishnan, Executive Director (Finance), FACT, gave away the prizes.
