MADURAI: The Tamil Nadu Energy Development Agency (TEDA) is working towards promoting solar-wind hybrid power generation units in south Tamil Nadu. Studies have ascertained that several areas in southern districts such as Kanyakumari, Kayathar, Tuticorin and coastal areas of Ramanathapuram, besides Pudukottai, are ideal. S.E.S. Syed Ahamed, TEDA's Deputy General Manager of Madurai Region, told The Hindu on Sunday that the hybrid power plants could generate power round-the-clock. The TEDA Madurai Region comprises 11 Southern and Central Districts from Kanyakumari to Tiruvarur. The Union Ministry of New and Renewable Energy will offer subsidy covering 75 per cent of the project cost or Rs. 1.5 lakh per kilowatt if such hybrid power plants were being installed in Government buildings such as panchayat offices, Collectorate and Government schools. In case of individuals, the subsidy would cover 50 per cent of the project cost or Rs. 1 lakh per KW. The TEDA would also provide the requisite technical advice to interested applicants. “With increasing use of solar and wind power for electricity generation, the State Government, through TEDA, is looking to promote both these renewable resources as an inevitable alternative to conventional power sources.”
