Vijayawada
Spreading the word: Purna Heart Institute chief A.Purnanand leading a Walk for Heart organised in association with The Hindu on the occasion of World Heart Day in Vijayawada on Sunday. VIJAYAWADA: “Get active and take heart”, “your heart beats for attention” and many more such slogans about the importance of having a healthy heart called out to passers by from placards being carried by people participating in a rally. The ‘Walk for Heart' taken out to mark the World Heart Day by the Purna Heart Institute and The Hindu received overwhelming from the public here on Sunday. The Purna Heart Institute chief A.Purnanand flagged of the rally at the Swaraj Maidan. The rally that included regular morning walkers, fitness enthusiasts, heart institute staff, The Hindu employees and a few patients of Dr Purnanand went right up to Benz Circle and came back to the Swaraj Maidan. Addressing a gathering after the rally Dr Purnanand said the secret of a healthy heart was eating less and working out more. Efforts should be made to reduce the fat around the waste. Indians were prone to becoming obese around the waste, he said. The theme of the World Heart Day that is observed on the last Sunday of September is “Work Place Wellness – Taking responsibility for your own heart health” this year. Retired Sociology professor Gannavaram Narashima Murthy said since he had his bypass surgery a few years ago he has made it a habit to walk and get exercise regularly. Prof. Murthy's wife is also a heart patient, who was virtually snatched back from the jaws of death by timely treatment at Purna Heart Institute. Brisk walking is essential for a healthy heart. Quoting Puttaparthi Sai Baba, Prof Murthy said the best ways to maintain a healthy heart was to “avoid curry, hurry and worry”. Tasty curry makes one over eat. Over eating should be avoided at any cost. Both hurry and worry lead to stress that is very dangerous, he said. Another patient P. Prasad said he changed his diet and exercising habits after suffering a mild heart attack and ever since he has been doing well. A.Swathantra Kumar said he suffered a second heart attack because he stopped medication. He was lucky to be able to become healthy. Now he takes his medication regularly and does exercise too. Regional General Manager K.Chandrasekharan also participated in the walk.
