Chamber on customs control at airport

Staff Reporter

MADURAI: The Tamil Nadu Chamber of Commerce and Industry has urged the Central Board of Excise and Customs to entrust customs control of Madurai Airport, as and when it gets international flight connectivity, to the Excise Commissionerate at Madurai rather than the Tiruchi Excise Commissionerate.

In a statement, chamber senior president S. Rethinavelu said that this was the practice being followed at Coimbatore with Central Excise Commissionerate in the city itself looks after customs work.

Similar practices were being followed at Cochin, Thiruvananthapuram, and Hyderabad international airports also.

Also from a trade and industry point of view, he said that it would be optimal if Madurai Central Excise Commissionerate handled the customs work at the Madurai Airport, he added.
