P. Nirmala Devi, a professor in the Department of Psychology, Andhra University, speaking at the workshop on ‘Art of parenting' at Delhi Public School in Visakhapatnam on Sunday. VISAKHAPATNAM: Communication, understanding and proper guidance are the key to tackle teenage issues. This was the observation of the speakers at the ‘Art of Parenting' workshop organised by The Hindu in association with Shriram Properties Ltd. at Delhi Public School, Steel Plant, on Sunday. P. Nirmala Devi, professor at the Deptartment of Psychology, Andhra University, spoke on the challenges faced by an adolescent and the role of parents in guiding the child. “Striking a balance between giving the child independence and offering support and guidance is important. Teenage period is a transition phase between childhood and adulthood. The child is surrounded by uncertainties, peer pressure increases and there are moments of rebellion. Parents need to be diplomatic and not over imposing while dealing with teenagers. Communicate with them and offer emotional support to them,” said Prof. Nirmala Devi. Dr. Suguna Kanan, HOD of Dept. of Home Science, St. Joseph's College for Women, spoke on the importance of nutrition in the overall development of children. Balanced diet A balanced diet and proper intake of vitamins and minerals leads to better mental development. “Nowadays, due to the impact of mass media youngsters have unrealistic dreams and often suffer due to faulty dietary habits. Right from movies to advertisements like Kareena Kapoor's ‘size zero' goal affects the young minds. They stop eating in order to get a slim figure leading to severe nutritional deficiencies,” Dr. Kanan said. She listed out a health chart highlighting the right doses of food intake. Figures Quoting figures, she said that 1.5 million adolescents all over the world die due to accidents, violence and pregnancy related issues. “Adolescent nutrition is very important to handle this issue for a sound mind in a healthy body,” she added. CEO of Shriram Properties Ltd. G.P. Ramana Murty, Chief Marketing Officer, Shriram Properties Ltd., Prof. Gan Bhukta and DPS school principal Aruna Kumari were present at the workshop.
