Former Prime Minister H.D.Deve Gowda being received by members of the Nilgiris District Vokkaliga Sangam in Ooty on Sunday. Udhagamandalam: The former Prime Minister H.D. Deve Gowda on Sunday assured members of the Vokkaliga community in the Nilgiris that he would extend a helping hand to them. Addressing the annual general meeting of the Nilgiris District Vokkaliga Sangam, he adverted to a demand expressed by members for putting up a multi-purpose hall for organising functions like marriages and said that he would take up the matter with Chief Minister M. Karunanidhi. It would be beneficial not only to the Vokkaliga community but also to others. Referring to a plea of the association for alienation of two acres of land from a total extent of about 70 acres owned by the Karnataka Government here, he said that if circumstances in Karnataka changed in his favour he would not be found wanting. Pointing out that the association has sought his intervention in getting the ban on night traffic imposed on the Mudumalai-Bandipur-Mysore road lifted, Mr. Gowda said that he would explore ways to address the issue with the authorities concerned. Stating that the association has also sought a quota for the Vokkaligas residing here in higher education facilities in Karnataka, he said that on account of the system which was now in existence, it would not be possible.
