Govt. college professor wins national award

Udhagamandalam: V.Azhagar Ramanujam, Professor, Government Arts College, Udhagamandalam has done his institution and the Nilgiris district proud by bagging the Indira Gandhi NSS Programme Officer Award for the year 2009-2010.

Pointing out that he was selected for the award because of his impressive track record in the field of service in this district for the past several years, his colleagues, students and others associated with him told The Hindu that they were not surprised with the recognition.

Campaigns

Stating that he was known for leading from the front, they said that many departments and organisations depended on him and his volunteers not only to effectively conduct campaigns to highlight social evils but also to deal with emergencies.

Listing some of the activities in which the NSS volunteers led by Mr. Ramanujam had made a mark, they said that while dealing with bush fires in the forests and wildlife sanctuaries the volunteers had been of considerable help to the forest staff.

Apart from creating awareness on harmful effects of plastic items, Mr. Azhagar Ramanujam has also focused on a number of health related issues.

They pointed out that he was a recipient of the best programme officer award at the State-level.

The national award was given to him by Minister of State for Youth Affairs and Sports Pratik Prakashbapu Patil.
