Memorandum submitted to RDC seeking rehabilitation of evacuees CUTTACK: Thousands of slum-dwellers in the city took out a rally and submitted a memorandum to the central zone Revenue Divisional Commissioner (RDC) on Wednesday demanding immediate rehabilitation of evacuees. Led by Orissa Basti Unnayan Mahasangha chief and CPI (M) leader Subash Singh, slum-dwellers took out the rally from city railway station to the RDC office where a protest meeting was held before submission of the memorandum. Speakers at the meeting came down heavily on the attitude of the local administration for their ‘indifferent' attitude towards the plight of the evacuees of Maa Mangala slum of the city. “Even as the High Court had directed the administration to rehabilitate the evacuees, no steps were taken in the direction yet,” they pointed out. More than 3000 people of the slum located near SCB Medical College and Hospital were evacuated by the administration nearly three months ago. “Although, initially, the administration relocated the evacuees at a nearby open land at Hadia Patha, the evacuees are now staying in precarious condition at roadside,” alleged the speakers. In its memorandum to the RDC, the Mahasangha demanded that the evacuated slum-dwellers should be rehabilitated immediately by the district administration as per the order of the High Court.
