A taste of Mysore, on a budget

Shankar Bennur

Special Dasara meal to be offered to tourists at a subsidised cost of Rs. 20

MYSORE: With a number of budget travellers expected to visit Mysore this Dasara, the Hotel Owners' Association here has come forward with a plan to serve low-cost vegetarian food of good quality to tourists.

A hot meal, called ‘Dasara Thali', will be offered at Rs. 20 on all ten days of the festivities that begin on October 8. The thali will be available in select restaurants located close to the venues of the various events.

Despite the rise in prices of essential commodities, especially vegetables, as well as an increase in overhead costs, the association has kept its promise to the then Minister in charge of Mysore district S. Suresh Kumar, who had appealed to the association to dish out food at subsidised costs.

“Restaurant owners will suffer a loss with this offer. But tourists are our ‘atithis' and we will serve them at a price that is unthinkable in the current scenario,” association president Rajendra M told The Hindu.

“Although the offer is open to all, it would be best if only those tourists looking for low-cost food make use of it. However, there won't be any restrictions, and we will be happy to serve the thali to anyone who asks for it,” Mr. Rajendra clarified. The actual price of the thali would be between Rs. 30 and Rs. 35. “Yet, we shall make it available at Rs. 20 for the satisfaction of our guests,” he said.

The meal would consist of a chapathi, curry, a bowl of bisibele bath, vangi bath or puliyogare, a bowl of rice, sambar, rasam, buttermilk, pickle and, of course, Mysore Pak, the special sweet of Mysore.
