GULBARGA: The Gulbarga Model University Action Forum has demanded that the State Government include Gulbarga University with Karnatak and Mysore universities, to be made ‘model universities'. The State Knowledge Commission had recommended that the Karnatak and Mysore universities be made model universities, along the lines of the Central University. A delegation led by president of the forum K.S. Wali and convener M.B. Sajjan met Additional Deputy Commissioner Math Mallikarjun here on Thursday and submitted a three-page memorandum addressed to the Chief Minister, listing out their arguments for making Gulbarga University a model university. The Higher Education Ministry in the State had prepared a draft Bill for converting a few universities into innovative universities with more autonomy in academic and administrative activities. The Bill is yet to get clearance from the Law Department. The State Knowledge Commission headed by scientist and Planning Commission member K. Kasturirangan had recommended to the Government to declare Mysore and Karnatak universities as model universities. This had stirred a hornet's nest with academics and non-teaching staff of Gulbarga University announcing a series of agitations. The forum had proposed to organise a strike and take out a procession to the Deputy Commissioner's office. However, as the State Government declared a holiday on Thursday for educational institutions, the members decided to meet the district authorities.
