Entrepreneurs to be invited to invest in the agricultural sector

Team of experts, farmers to visit Israel

Matsamudra (Chitradurga district): K.V. Raju, Economic Adviser to Chief Minister B.S. Yeddyurappa, has said that the Government was planning to hold a Global Agricultural Investors' Meet in the beginning of next year, to strengthen agriculture and horticulture sectors in the State.

He was speaking at a discussion on organic farming with the farmers, organised by the Karnataka Agriculture Mission here on Thursday.

Changes

Mr. Raju said that the Government wished to bring rapid changes in the agriculture, horticulture, dairy and agriculture marketing sectors.

“During the last Global Investors Meet, the Government signed memorandums of understanding with investors to the tune of over Rs. 5.25 lakh crore. Now, after its success, Karnataka, for the first time in the county, will hold an Agricultural Investors' Meet to invite entrepreneurs to invest in the agriculture sector,” he said.

Technologies

Mr. Raju said that the Government would like to adopt technologies and methods in agriculture sector being implemented in developed countries such as China.

He said that a team of experts had been constituted to visit Israel to replicate the drip irrigation method in the State.

Besides the experts, a few farmers would also visit that country to learn more about the technique which had proved successful in Israel, he said.

Drip irrigation would largely help the dry land districts of the State that receive inadequate rainfall and have minimum water resources, he said.

Pilot project

To provide safe and fluoride-free drinking water, he said a pilot project for Rs. 2,260 crore had been planned for Chitradurga and Bijapur districts for providing water using surface water mainly of lakes and reservoirs, Mr. Raju said.

“The Government has received the feasibility report from both the districts, soon tenders will be invited to implement the project,” mr. Raju said.

Chief Minister B.S. Yeddyurappa, Revenue Minister G. Karunakara Reddy and Minister for Sports and Prisons D. Sudhakar spoke on the occasion.
