Coastal corridor will be stopped: Narayana

VISAKHAPATNAM: Acquisition of land in coastal districts in the name of forming a coastal industrial corridor will be opposed and stopped at all costs Communist Party of India State Secretary K. Narayana has said.

At a public meeting at Rajaiahpeta in Nakkapalli mandal the CPI leaders said that he was ready to build a massive agitation even at the cost of facing bullets to stop Government from acquiring fertile land for the `Coastal Corridor'. “In the name of development the Government was trying to take away about 3,000 acres of fertile lands in this region,” he alleged.

Health and livelihood of locals was getting affected beyond the scope of restoration due to the indiscriminate acquisition of land for foreign industrial units or other investments, he said and promised to oppose all such policy decisions to transfer the holding of land from locals to outsiders in the name of `development'.

Current policies were working against the fishermen communities along the coastal belt as the Chief Minister Konijeti Rosaiah was working against the people's interests. The setting up of Hetero Drugs manufacturing unit at Nallamattipalem in the region had led to pollution of the sea water between Dondapaka and Rajaiahpeta. The fish catch had come down sharply for the fishermen from Boipadu, Amalapuram, Lakshmipuram and Bangaraiahpeta following the setting up of the factory, he observed.

Assigned lands, which were being tilled for the past several decades by the locals should not be acquired for industrial units as the livelihood of these people gets disturbed beyond restoration and cautioned the Government of an uprising.

While the district committee member R.V. Jaggarao presided over the meeting, attended by a large number of fishermen, others from the CPI who attended included, district secretary J.V. Satyanarayana Murthy, former MLAs Chengala Venkata Rao, Palla Venkata Reddy, G. Demudu, Rajaiahpeta Sarpanch Gosala Kasulamma and MPTC Akuvidu Govind.
