Varsities urged to start more programmes for counsellors
Staff Reporter
CHENNAI: Universities should start more academic programmes focussing on counselling and skills training, Tamil Nadu Social Welfare Board Chairperson Salma said here recently.
Speaking at the inauguration of a training programme for counsellors by the Board, she said “There are a number issues but the lack of trained people in Tamil Nadu is a challenge.” A total of 15 counsellors have been selected for the training programme. They would undergo training for a six-month period with sessions for two days in a month. As many as 72 units in the State, with six of them in the city, have been associated with tackling challenges pertaining to family and relationships.
Police stations have started to refer such instances to counsellors instead of registering cases. Commissioner of Police T. Rajendran stressed the need for improving the skills of the counsellors and creating awareness among police in order to solve emerging problems faced by people in their relationships.
“The training programme is based on transactional analysis and neuro-linguistic analysis,” said Susan George, Psychotherapist and Trustee, India-Asia, International Transactional Analysis Association.
