Eight get 10 years' RI for rape

Staff Reporter

BANGALORE: The Fifth Fast Track Sessions Court, Bangalore Rural, sentenced eight persons to 10 years rigorous imprisonment on finding them guilty of raping a 40-year-old woman in Yeshwanthpur hobli.

The incident occurred at a village in Yeshwanthpur hobli in October 2007.

The eight convicted men — Kuppa, Chandra, Srinivas, Venkataswamy, Marappa, Muniyappa, Kariya and Dharma — entered the house of the woman and asked for her jewellery.

When she refused, they took her away. They hit her son when he tried to stop them.

As the eight men raped the woman, her son rushed to the villagers seeking help.

The villagers came to the spot and caught hold of three persons. They were beaten black and blue and then handed over to the police. On the basis of the information by the three, the police arrested the other five persons. Public prosecutor B.M. Karjol examined 18 witnesses, including the woman, who boldly narrated on camera that she was raped.
