‘Nation has bigger problems than Ayodhya'

Accept Allahabad High Court verdict with equanimity, says Kumaraswamy

BANGALORE: Former Chief Minister and Janata Dal (Secular) leader H.D. Kumaraswamy on Thursday said the country was facing bigger problems than the Ayodhya tangle and felt that the people of the country should focus on resolving them.

Reacting to the verdict delivered by the Lucknow Bench of the Allahabad High Court, Mr. Kumaraswamy called upon religious organisations to accept the verdict with equanimity.

He also appealed to the organisations against resorting to fomenting trouble. “No effort should be made to provoke people or fan religious emotions,” he said.

Meanwhile, the Komu Souharda Vedike has said the verdict in the Ayodhya tangle had failed to take into account the Constitutional principles while settling the dispute.

In a statement, K.L. Ashok, convenor of the vedike, said that the “faith-based judgment” might open a Pandora's box of similar disputes. “This might lead to a brute, majoritarian democracy,” he warned.

“However, peace should be maintained at all costs,” he said.

In a statement, the Federation of Karnataka Chamber of Commerce and Industry (FKCCI) president N.S. Srinivasa Murthy described the judgment of the Allahabad High Court as a “balanced one”.

The FKCCI has appealed to people in Karnataka to accept the judgement with equanimity and maintain peace and harmony.
