ZP resolves to compensate ryots

Correspondent

VIZIANAGARAM: The Zilla Parishad at its general body meeting on Friday adopted a resolution to compensate farmers who incurred loss on account of admixtures and non-germination of seed supplied by the A.P. Seed Development Corporation during kharif 2010-11 and also ask the government to sanction compensation for kharif 2009-10.

It also decided to achieve cent per cent literacy in 20 per cent of panchayats this year, 30 per cent in 2011-12 and 50 per cent in 2012-13 under the ‘Sakshar Bharat' programme. There are 3.54 lakh illiterates in the district. B. Chandrasekhar, chairperson, chaired the meeting.

MSP sought

When the agenda on agriculture came for discussion, Nellimarla ZPTC member Singh Babu expressed dismay at the delayed sanctioning of crop loans and asked official machinery to correct the system as farmers faced hardship in procuring seed, fertilizers and crop loans since the beginning of kharif. He appealed for minimum support price for paddy. Collector M. Veerabrahmaiah said that the government rate was Rs. 1030 per quintal for superfine variety and Rs.1000 for common variety and arrangements were being made for procurement. He regretted that the target to disburse Rs. 432 crore crop loans during kharif could not be achieved. It had fallen short by Rs. 80 crore and hoped to disburse it along with Rs.100 crore for rabi.

He said that unlike in the past 610 joint liability groups were given Rs. 3.10 crore and added that the ‘pavala vaddi' scheme, crop insurance and subsequent loan facility would be given if only farmers repaid the loan in time.

Crop submerged

On breaches to tanks due to excess rainfall, the chairperson asked farmers to plug them without waiting for the government's sanction. Garugubilli ZPTC member G. Ramu said that crop in 2000 acres at Vullibhadra village was submerged due to unfinished channels of Thotapalli and demanded compensation to farmers.

Bobbili MLA Sujaya Krishna Ranga Rao said though Vengalarao Sagar reached its full reservoir level (FRL), tail-end farmers at Mallampeta were not receiving water and sought action.

The members also demanded immediate repairs to roads and regular bus services during college timings. They rejected the chairperson's suggestion to staggered timings and criticised the APSRTC authorities for not meeting the demand.

A majority of Telugu Desam members were absent at the meeting for unknown reasons.
