Mass pledge against plastic waste today

Kozhikode: One lakh people will take a pledge against plastic waste during the launch of ‘Mass Action for Plastic Waste-free Kozhikode (MAP), a project to make Kozhikode a plastic waste-free district, on the beach here on Saturday.

District Collector P.B. Salim, who announced this in a release here on Thursday, said historian M.G.S. Narayanan would deliver the Gandhi commemorative speech at the function, which will start at 9 a.m.

The project, to be completed in five phases, will be realised with the cooperation of educational institutions, local bodies, Kudumbasree units, libraries, cultural organisations, and clubs and NGOs working in the district.

The district administration, in association with the Information and Public Relations Department and the Education Department, has made elaborate preparations for the implementation of the project. Sensitization campaigns among students and the general public have been planned.

Students from schools in the Corporation limits, selected representatives of students from schools outside the Corporation limits, teachers and cultural leaders will participate in the launch ceremony.

Screening of documentaries, a dance and music programme led by lyricist Kaithapram Damodaran Namboodiri and talks by environmentalists and cultural leaders will be some of the highlights of the ceremony.

A 16-foot sculpture made of different types of plastic waste by 10 sculptors will be unveiled during the function.

The first phase of MAP comprises a large-scale awareness and sensitization programme, mainly aimed at students, including those from 1,500 schools and nearly 50 colleges in the district. “Resource Recovery Centres to collect plastic waste will be set up in all schools in the first phase,” Dr. Salim said. Plastic waste would be collected from the schools in a vehicle on a weekly basis.

Actors Suresh Gopi and Lakshmi Gopalaswamy will be present at the function.

Minister of State for Home Affairs Mullappally Ramachandran; State Industries Minister Elamaram Karim; M.K. Raghavan, MP; the former Supreme Court judge V.R. Krishna Iyer; environmentalists A. Achuthan and T. Sobeendran; scriptwriter T.A. Razak; and leaders from the socio-political arena; will attend the function.
