Indian women's medal hopes dashed

NEW DELHI: India's medal hopes in the women's section suffered a decisive blow when it lost 1-3 to second seed China in 10th and penultimate round of the Chess Olympiad at Khanty Mansiysk, Russia, on Friday.

Eesha Karavade and S. Meenakshi lost in the middle boards while D. Harika and Nisha Mohota came out undefeated as India slipped to the tied seventh spot with 14 match-points.

Russian women ensured the title with a round to spare by reaching 20 match-points, after maintaining an all-win record.

In the open section, India, out of medal contention, defeated Switzerland 3-1 with K. Sasikiran and Surya Shekhar Ganguly winning with black pieces to provide the victory margin.
