MDMK to ensure ouster of Sterlite plant from State

Special Correspondent

CHENNAI: The Marumalarchi Dravida Munnetra Kazhagam will continue to fight till the ouster of Sterlite Industries' copper smelter unit from the State, said general secretary Vaiko on Friday.

In a statement here, he said that the Sterlite management might try several ways to get the Madras High Court's closure order stayed. But, the MDMK would oppose such a move in the Supreme Court too. “From 1994 till 2004 several accidents have taken place in which 139 workers have sustained major injuries. Thirteen have died. It will definitely affect the health of others. Hence, the State government should make arrangements to pay them compensation and provide alternative jobs.”
