KSU, SFI claim victories in MG varsity college union polls

The SFI lost the chairman's post at Ernakulam Maharaja's College after a gap of nearly two decades.


KOCHI: Kerala Students Union (KSU) and Students Federation of India (SFI) claimed to have bagged victories in the students union elections held at the colleges in Ernakulam district affiliated to the Mahatma Gandhi University on Friday.

Both the organisations claimed that they won majority of the seats in the elections.

Jinto John, district president of the KSU, said that the SFI faced one of its worst defeats when it lost the chairman post at Ernakulam Maharaja's College after a gap of nearly two decades.

Mr. John said that Jino John, the KSU candidate, defeated his rival by a margin of 254 votes.

KSU also claimed to have bagged the entire seats in U. C. College, Aluva; Al-Ameen College, Edathala; Cochin College; Baselius Poulose II Catholicos College, Piravom; Mar Elias College, Kottapady; St. Thomas Arts and Science College, Puthencruz; Jai Bharath College, Arakkapady; and BPS College, Piramadom.

Lijo Jose, district secretary of SFI, claimed that the federation won the entire seats in 15 colleges including Bharat Mata College, Thrikkakara; SNM College, Maliankara; RLV, Thripunitura; MA College, Kothamangalam; YMBC, Kothamangalam; Government Sanskrit College, Thripunitura; Ilahia College of Arts and Science, Muvattupuzha; SME, Angamaly; SME, Thevara; and STAS, Edappally.

A release issued by the St. Teresa's College authorities said that Nidhi Thachankary was elected as chairperson. Jyothika Roy is the new general secretary of the college union.

Other office-bearers include Batul K. Attaria (vice chairperson); Sharmila Nair (arts club secretary); and Saniya Moopan (magazine editor).
