Plea to introduce overnight train

Special Correspondent

TIRUCHI: A plea to introduce a new overnight train from Tiruchi to Chennai on the mainline via Thanjavur, Kumbakonam and Mayiladuthurai was made by the members of the Divisional Railway Users Consultative Committee at its meeting held here on Thursday.

P. V. Vaidialingam, Divisional Railway Manager and Chairman of the Committee, presided over the meeting held at the DRM's office.

All the members demanded the restoration of the Rockfort Express back to Tiruchi. The Rockfort Express now originates from Kumbakonam and the introduction of a new overnight train on the mainline will be an alternative relief to the passengers of the delta districts.

Referring to the works on the upgrade of the platform numbers 1 and 2 in Thanjavur Railway Junction, the members demanded steps for expeditious execution of the same. At present only three platforms are available in Thanjavur junction and they are not adequate enough to meet the train traffic.

They also demanded re-introduction of the Tiruchi - Tirupathi express via Villupuram, Tiruvannamalai and Vellore Cantonment after the completion of gauge conversion between Villupuram and Vellore.

Mr. Vaidialingam highlighted the performance of the division. He assured to take up all the demands of the members to the Southern Railway headquarters. A.P.Muthuramalingam, Senior Divisional Commercial Manager and othe r senior officials participated.
