Who are eligible to fit revolving red lights?

Special Correspondent

An RTI applicant's query to the State Transport Department

MADURAI: Who are the persons eligible to have revolving red light fitted in their cars?

A query to this extent was raised by an applicant to the State Transport Department through the RTI Act.

In its reply, the officials have stated that according to the State government G.O. dated June 5, 2008, the Governor, Chief Minister, Legislative Assembly Speaker, Corporation Mayor, Ministers, High Court Chief Justice and Judges, Director General of Police (officer holding the top position alone), Commissioner of Police, ambulance vehicles, pilot and escort vehicles, District Collectors, Superintendents of Police, Deputy Inspectors General of Police, State Election Commissioner, Chairman, Tamil Nadu Public Service Commission, Director General of Police (law and order), Chennai, Inspector General of Police (south zone, Madurai), Chairman and Member of the Advisory Board constituted under NSA and under Tamil Nadu Act-14/1982, Prince of Arcot Nawab Abdul Ali.

Persons not covered under the above 19 categories shall not use the revolving red lights in their vehicles. The authorities, namely, the RTO and Police, at the respective districts and cities are authorised to take action against persons who had fitted the gadget.

The G.O. further stated that other vehicles shall fit revolving red lights only during movement of dignitary or dignitaries in their towns/cities as part of protocol.

Reliable sources in the Transport Department told The Hindu on Friday that many officials, even after retirement from their postings, used the revolving red lights in their private cars.

Some of the revenue authorities who did not enjoy the privilege – designated in the rank of RDOs and Tahsildars, among others moved with the revolving lights. Some retired judicial officers and ruling party functionaries who were holding the position as deputy chairman of welfare board/panchayats too were no exception.
