More of public space coming under surveillance

Police are confident of nabbing suspects after recent camera recordings, writes

S. Vijay Kumar

Days after a surveillance camera installed on EVR Salai-Nelson Manickam Road junction recorded an act of murder, resulting in the arrest of the accused person within hours, another camera positioned at the Mehta Nagar junction has captured a burglary scene. Police are confident of nabbing the suspects in the case soon.

It was a constant exercise of the Chennai Police to bring more of public space under surveillance by installing Closed Circuit Television (CCTV) network along commercial streets, banks, malls, junctions and residential areas.

“The detection of the murder case with the help of video footage explains the significance of surveillance cameras. The Aminjikarai Inspector S. Anantharaman took interest in installing six cameras in that locality, which helped in solving the case. We intend to double the number of cameras in the city [presently 3,000 plus] by creating the facility in crime/accident-prone areas,” Commissioner of Police T. Rajendran said.

He said that on the request of the police, many malls, shops, banks and other private establishments had agreed to install a couple of cameras facing the road. “Besides preventing crimes, this will also help in regulating traffic,” Mr. Rajendran said.

In the Aminjikarai police station limits, surveillance cameras have come up in residential areas such as Ayyavoo Naidu Colony and Lakshmi Talkies Road. “We have cameras at almost all the junctions. Some lanes leading to junctions have also been covered. Any person committing an offence and reaching the main road to escape will be caught by the camera. Efforts are on to bring the entire Nelson Manickam Road under the scanner,” a police official said.
