Vibrant show: A folk dance performance organised as part of the ‘Battle of Buffet' in Chennai. CHENNAI: It was perhaps one of the most extensive spreads with a mind-boggling variety of cuisines under one roof in the city. But the culinary spread was not just about satiating the taste buds. It was an effort to thank philanthropic minds for doing their bit of good to society. ‘Battle of Buffet,' a fund-raising event organised here on Thursday as part of the Joy of Giving Week, had the city's top-slot hotels dishing out their signature food. The event, organised by Oriental Cuisines and GiveIndia, raised over Rs.85 lakh in donation, which would be distributed to 40 participating NGOs. Tanker Foundation collected near Rs.24 lakh during the Joy of Giving Week, including Rs.8.5 lakh for the Battle of Buffet. “This event helps broaden both the donor base for NGOs and NGO base for the donors,” said Latha Kumaraswami of the Foundation. Donors who made a contribution of Rs.5,000 were invited for the dinner. Oriental Cuisines Managing Director M. Mahadevan said the event was to felicitate philanthropists and voluntary organisations who have been supporting the downtrodden. There was a light music performance by singer Srinivas. Member of Parliament Kanimozhi participated in the event.
