Air India flight makes emergency landing after fumes in cabin

A Correspondent

Nedumbasserry: A Riyadh-bound Air India flight from Kozhikode with 197 passengers and 12 crew members on board had to abort its journey midway after making an emergency landing at the Cochin International Airport here on Saturday, triggering panic among the passengers.

Airline officials said flight AI 901 operating in the Kochi-Kozhikode-Riyadh sector landed here after being airborne for nearly an hour and a half when the crew onboard reported fumes on the cabin side.

The pilot passed on the information to the Air Traffic Control (ATC) authorities who, in turn, alerted the airport operator to provide for a full-course emergency landing of the aircraft.

The aircraft was grounded safely by 8-20 a.m. even as the security and rescue officials took their position to face any contingency. According to the airline's official spokesperson, the flight had taken off from the airport here at 4.30 a.m. and resumed its onward journey from Kozhikode two hours later. The passengers, who had been shifted to nearby hotels here, were scheduled to resume their journey at 9.30 p.m. by a relief aircraft to be brought from Mumbai.
