One of the parks being developed at Mogappair West by Ambattur Municipality. CHENNAI: Several areas of Ambattur Municipality will get more parks by November as the local body is expediting works to develop 15 such facilities. It has allocated Rs.3 crore this fiscal to develop parks in vacant lands and around waterbodies that are being polluted. Work is under way to improve many of the existing 10 parks and create new ones in many areas, including Anna Nagar West. Officials of the municipality said that the Rs.1.2-crore project to rejuvenate Thangal lake in Vijayalakshmipuram and develop a park around it would be over by November. While construction of a compound wall around the seven-acre site and drainage network was nearing completion, work was on to deepen the lake and provide walkers' track. Similar work was being carried out at Selliamman temple tank in Athipet. The municipality was also planning to construct a compound wall around a three-acre land in Elango Nagar to create park and construct a much awaited sports complex. A green belt of 10 metre would also be developed at a cost of Rs.72 lakh. Funding from State government was awaited for the complex that would have several facilities, including a badminton court and swimming pool, an official said. The parks coming up on Eighth Cross Street, Mogappair Eri Scheme at a cost of Rs.15 lakh, near Mogappair West bus terminus, ICF Colony and Gopalaswamy Nagar in Ambattur were expected to be opened in a month. Four small parks being developed in Anna Nagar Western Extension would also be opened in two months. Other localities, including Padi and Kallikuppam, would soon have such recreation spaces. The local body also plans to start work to restore five waterbodies next month.
