Programme to create awareness on cancer

Volunteers of National Service Scheme create awareness on cancer in Udhagamandalam on Saturday.

Udhagamandalam: Setting off with handbills from the Uzhavar Sandhai at Charing Cross here, about 50 National Service Scheme volunteers, including 20 girls from Government Arts College moved to various parts of this hill station including Commercial road, Lower Bazaar, Collectorate and Government Botanical Garden on Saturday.

Led by the Programme Officer Azhagar Ramanujam, the objective of the campaign was to enhance awareness about the dreaded malady cancer among various sections of society.

Interacting with the people, particularly women, belonging to the under educated section, they pointed out how breast cancer can affect them. They were told to give maximum importance to breast feeding.

They explained to them the grave harm done by smoking and chewing tobacco.

The campaign was conducted in association with the Sree Ramakrishna Cancer Treatment and Research Centre, Coimbatore.
