Gujarat all set for the first round of local body elections

AHMEDABAD: In the first round of elections to Gujarat's local self-government bodies, considered to be a mid-term assessment of the Narendra Modi government's performance, six municipal corporations in the State will go to the polls on Sunday.

This will be followed by elections to 24 of the 26 district panchayats, 208 of 225 taluk panchayats and 53 municipalities on October 21.

The elections to the seventh municipal corporation Junagadh — was held last year where the Congress managed to claim the civic body with a razor-thin majority.

BJP stronghold

Currently, the Bharatiya Janata Party is in control in all the six municipal corporations of Ahmedabad, Surat, Vadodara, Rajkot, Jamnagar and Bhavnagar.

A total of 86.19 lakh voters in 186 wards will exercise their franchise in the first round of polls and another 2.35 crore voters are due to exercise their franchise in the second round of elections, as many as 3.40 crore of the total State electorate of 3.66 crore will have the opportunity to give their opinion through the ballots about the performance of the Modi government in the State.

The counting of votes will begin on October 12.
