Amusing entertainer

Endhiran

With its stunning visuals and humorous touch, the movie ‘Endhiran' (The Robot) written and directed by Shankar is an entertainer for the most part. However, the latter part of the movie that narrates how the killer robot is overcome leaves the viewer unsatisfied because of a weak storyline. The portrayal of the killer robot in ‘typical cinema villain' style is also a bit jarring.

Scientist Dr. Vasee (Rajnikanth) creates a robot in his own image. The robot is named Chitty (Rajnikanth). Vasee's aim is to get the robot accepted by the Indian Army to assist in the security of the nation. Meanwhile, Dr. Bohra, a senior scientist whom Vasee considers his guru, is also making a robot. Bohra intends to sell his robot to a foreign country. Unfortunately, Bohra's robot fails to function. Seeing Chitty's performance, Bohra decides to steal the technical knowhow by hook or crook. Bohra tells Vasee that Chitty's drawback is that it cannot think logically. Vasee reworks and soon equips Chitty with the ability to think and emote the feelings of a human being.

Vasee and Sana (Aishwarya Rai Bachchan) are in love. In several critical moments, the robot Chitty comes to Sana's rescue. The grateful Sana always responds by hugging Chitty. When Chitty gets a mind of his own he is attracted to Sana and expresses his love for her. The military chiefs decide to interview Chitty to test his capability. Love-struck Chitty exhorts the army men to stop their wars and start loving everybody. The Army straightaway rejects the robot. Vasee's dream is thus shattered.

In a fit of rage he smashes Chitty into pieces. Later, Chitty rebuilds himself. And, with Bohra's help he also regains his original form. But he has now turned into a malicious killer.

Rajnikanth excels as robot Chitty. Aishwarya Rai Bachchan makes her presence felt. Retnavelu's camera works wonders. Though A.R. Rahman's music disappoints, visual effects add to the quality of the film. G. Jayakumar
