Spellbound: Children at the story telling workshop organised by CARE International School in Tiruchi on Saturday. TIRUCHI: Everybody loves a good story but not everybody is a good storyteller. The storytelling workshop for children and parents organised by the Care International School at Kalaignar Arivalayam on Saturday sought to unearth the storyteller lurking within each individual. “We want to revive the old tradition of telling stories through the workshop,” said Preethi Aravamudan, Principal. “Story telling can help in personality development and in moulding children,” she said Devarajan, Professional story telling trainer, World Storytelling Institute, Chennai engaged his audience of around 250 wide-eyed school students and engrossed parents with a series of interactive story telling sessions. Mr.Devarajan narrated an intriguing tale of a boy whose wishes were granted by merely thinking. Leaving the tale hanging enticingly at “What if a lion were to come here…”, he threw the floor open and urged students to supply the ending for the tale. The session designed to trigger the creativity of kids had one stipulation- ‘think good things.' In the following session, students armed with crayons, attempted to bring a story alive on canvas by translating words into pictures. Parents and grandparents who accompanied the children were invited to share a few stories and later received a few tips on story telling from the trainer. “Crucial elements of story telling include plot, characters and narrative point of view,” he added. The audience plays an important role in story telling due to the interaction between the listeners and the storyteller,” said Mr.Devarajan. Apart from firing the imagination, story telling can be employed to make teaching more exciting and effective, particularly in the teaching of Literature, History, Social Studies, Biology and Ecology .
