Workshop on hazard risk organised

TIRUCHI: A workshop in the run-up to a hazard risk and vulnerability assessment of the city taken up under the Urban Risk Reduction Programme (URRP), implemented by the Union government and the United Nations Development Programme, was conducted in the city

on Friday.

The programme envisages the drawing up of a disaster management plan for the city and conduct an urban hazard risk and vulnerability assessment.

Officials of the various government departments and the City Corporation participated in the workshop to identify major hazards faced by the city, explore the availability of databases, maps and studies and list out the vulnerable places and installations.

The officials were encouraged to provide information on the major hazards that the city could possibly face based on their experiences, share information on available resources, including databases, maps, statistics and websites pertaining to previous disasters in the city and also identify vulnerable places such as hospitals, schools, parks, malls, vital installations and natural resources.

Collector Mahesan Kasirajan, who inaugurated the workshop, appealed to the government officials to pull in their resources and share information available with for better handling of disasters. He underlined the need for sensitising officials and training them to handle emergency situations better.
