VISAKHAPATNAM: Union Minister for Heavy Industries Vilasrao Deshmukh on Wednesday promised to expedite the process for merging Bharat Heavy Plate and Vessels (BHPV) with Bharat Heavy Electrical Limited (BHEL). He made the promise at a high-level review meeting held in New Delhi on public sector industries with the officials of the Department of Heavy Industries (DHI), top brass of public sectors, INTUC president G. Sanjeeva Reddy and others. INTUC State general secretary and district president K.S. Mohan Kumar, who attended the meeting, told The Hindu that the Minister gave a categorical assurance for merger of BHPV with BHEL at the earliest. The issue would be taken up after clearance from Draft Rehabilitation Scheme (DRS). The BHPV was made a holding company of BHEL, a navaratna company, two years ago after an announcement that it would be merged with BHEL. Subsequently the employees and their families launched an agitation to merge it with BHEL. Dr. Mohan Kumar said the Minister directed the department officials to regularise R-series workers numbering 163 who were working as NMRs for the past 18 years. He said the officials of DHI also conveyed their willingness to make them permanent and implement 1997 wage revision. BHEL Chairman and Managing Director V.P. Rao, BHPV CMD S.S. Gupta, BHEL Director (human resources) Anil Sachdev and others were present. Meanwhile, BHPV National Employees' Union president V. Babu Rao, general secretary Ch. Munni Babu and additional general secretary B.S. Varma welcomed the decisions taken by Mr. Deshmukh.
