Women candidates for conductor post stage protest
Special Correspondent
TAMBARAM: A section of women who had turned up for a test conducted by the Metropolitan Transport Corporation (MTC) for the post of conductors staged a demonstration on Thursday, alleging malpractice. Authorities however dismissed the allegations, stating that the entire selection process was transparent and that they had strictly abided by guidelines. Selection for the post of women conductors was held at the Training Institute of MTC at Chromepet and nearly 40 women from many areas of Kancheepuram reported for the tests. While the minimum height was 160 centimetres and weight was 45 kg, the women said some of them who met the eligibility norms were asked to leave without any justification or even an explanation. Protesting the decision of the institute's authorities who asked them to leave, they resorted to a “sit-in” but left when personnel from Chitlapakkam police station arrived.
According to S.Jayavalli and Ganga Gowri, they were more than 160 cm in height but were rejected on the grounds that they were not tall enough.
However, authorities said 37 women had come to the institute and four of them were selected.
Only a handful of the disgruntled women resorted to the protest while others left without a complaint, the authorities added.
