TIRUVANNAMALAI: Students displayed one trait in common by their boisterous participation at the Tiruvannamalai education district-level science exhibition held here recently - that even science as a subject of knowledge can be a source of celebration . About 250 students from 53 schools, mostly government schools, showcased their flair for innovation and their ability to apply scientific theories to real life requirements. From the moment the expo was inaugurated by District Education Officer C. Joseph Antony Raj and until it was declared closed by Chief Educational Officer (CEO) S. Suganya in the evening, there was not a moment of dullness among either the brains behind the project or the visitors. While many attractive and ingenious projects were showcased in the stalls, the device that won the heart of most of the students who visited the expo was the pneumatic rocket, ‘launched successfully' several times through the day amid exited cries. The project designed by a group of vocational students of the host, Shanmuga Industries Government Higher Secondary School, Tiruvannamalai, employed a simple philosophy, but boasted of an eye-catching execution. Entertaining projects Apart from the rocket that stole the show, there were several entertaining projects and designs that triggered curiosity as well. Exhibits such as the earthmover model designed with the help of a handful of syringes by K. Venkatesan of Mambattu Government Higher Secondary School; and a simple demonstration of the desalination technique by N. Mohanapriya and R. Pradeepa of Municipal Girls Higher Secondary School, Tiruvannamalai were some of the interesting exhibits. Five themes There were five themes stipulated for the expo viz. biodiversity conservation, agriculture and technology, green energy, transport & communication and community health &environment. A winner and a runner-up were chosen for each theme. Government Higher Secondary School, Mambattu was chosen as overall best performer with the host bagging the second best performer award.
