Tender process for laying concrete roads in Villupuram town has started, says Minister
K. Ponmudy VILLUPURAM: The old government hospital in Villupuram that remains idle now will be made into a town centre of the government medical college at Mundiampakkam, according to Higher Education Minister K. Ponmudy. After opening the new government hospital attached to the medical college at Mundiampakkam, the old government hospital had become non-functional. Therefore, to put the campus to use, it was also proposed to set up a nursing college there. Mr. Ponmudy was speaking at a function organised at Alanthur in Koliyanur block near here recently . With the underground drainage work now completed, it was proposed to lay concrete roads in Villupuram town at a cost of Rs. 8 crore, for which tender process had started. Villupuram, which earlier had the dubious distinction of being an educationally backward district, could now boast of a government medical college, two government engineering colleges affiliated to Anna University-Chennai, a polytechnic college and several upgraded schools. As regards the Kalaignar housing scheme, Mr. Ponmudy said Chief Minister M. Karunanidhi had sanctioned a sum of Rs. 75,000 for each unit. However, the Communist parties were saying that the amount was inadequate. Mr. Ponmudy said that even in Kerala, where the Communist parties were in power, only Rs. 50,000 was being given as housing assistance. The Minister further said that after increasing the number of eggs supplied in the noon meal centres from three to five a week, women were keen on sending their wards to schools. At Alanthur, Mr. Ponmudy gave away 564 free gas connections. Later, at Vazhadareddi, he inaugurated the panchayat union office, an overhead tank and an anganwadi building all built at a total cost of Rs. 42 lakh. Collector R. Palanisamy and Municipal Chairman R. Janakaraj were present.
