Counterfeit currency seized, youth arrested

Tirupur: The city police seized counterfeit currency with a face value of Rs. 48,500 (83 X Rs. 500 and 7 X Rs. 1,000) here on Friday. J. Khurshid (25), a native of West Bengal, was arrested for its alleged possession.
The police also recovered Rs.1.71 lakh from Khurshid's house which was said to have been amassed by trading the counterfeit notes for cash as well as for goods.
Superintendent of Police A. Arun said the accused was arrested while attempting to purchase huge quantities of goods from a retail FMCG outlet at K.V.R. Nagar with the fake notes.
“The entire 93 counterfeit notes looked to have been printed abroad considering its quality, which made it difficult to distinguish from the original currencies,” the SP said.
The accused, according to him, has been staying with five other North Indians in the city in the pretext of carrying out garment business.
Of the five roommates, three were from Bihar and two from West Bengal. All of them escaped from the city soon after Khurshid was arrested.
Mr. Arun said the case would be transferred to the CB-CID.
“Even the Rs.1.71-lakh cash seized from his house which looked to be original prima facie, will be sent to the Reserve Bank of India to ascertain its genuineness,” he added.
