Speed lane system planned on Avanashi Road

Special Correspondent

Coimbatore: A system of marking separate lanes for vehicles on the basis of speed will be introduced shortly on Avanashi Road, said City Police Commissioner C. Sylendra Babu here on Wednesday.

He was speaking at an interactive session of the City Police with captains of industry led by Confederation of Indian Industry. R. Nandini, chairperson of CII – Tamil Nadu Chapter and J. Balamurugan, chairperson of Coimbatore Chapter. Deputy Commissioners of Police, P. Nagarajan (Law and Order), N. Kamini (Crime and Traffic), E.S. Uma (Head Quarters), Valli Nayagam (Armed Reserve) attended the session.

Mr. Sylendra Babu said that the lane system introduced on Avanashi Road could not be successfully implemented owing to various reasons. Now the police plan to introduce a speed lane system. For example the lane near the median would be allotted for fast moving vehicles (over 50 kmph), the middle lane for vehicles moving at 40 kmph and the next for slow moving vehicles.

To decongest city roads and to streamline the flow of traffic, a number of one-way and no-entry systems were introduced. They have helped in achieving the desired results, he said. But the same proved to be a failure in respect of NSR Road and Bharathiar Road for lack of cooperation from the people. The police are continuing with their efforts to streamline the city traffic and to decongest the roads. Mr. Babu said that on an average 600 cases were being booked for violation of road rules and in one year alone Rs. 3.5 crore was realised as penalty in this regard.

Mr. Babu said that 100 cameras have been fixed on the roads across the city. Based on the images captured by these cameras, the police are planning to send notices for road rule violation to motorists.
