DISPLAY OF SKILLS:Wrestlers in action at the wrestling competitions in Hospet on Sunday BELLARY: ‘Naada Habba' Dassara was celebrated with traditional gaiety and religious fervour in Bellary district on Sunday. People, especially women and children, were seen visiting temples to offer puja on the auspicious day, right from morning. In the evening, they exchanged ‘banni' leaves seeking blessing from elders and exchanging greetings with friends and family. On Saturday, the day of Durgashtami, the Kanaka Durgamma temple was agog with devotees from all over the district. Goddess Durgamma was adorned with a variety of ornaments. The temple precinct was tastefully decorated with colourful illuminations and the rendering of bhajans and discourses were also held. In Hospet, ‘Kusti' (wrestling) matches were held at the taluk stadium as part of the Dasara celebrations on Sunday. Wrestling is a popular sport in this part and matches are organised often. ‘Kusti', which acquired prominence during the Vijayanagar rule, continues to enjoy the same status even today. There are several places in and around Hampi and Hospet city to groom young ‘pehalwans' (wrestlers). ‘Pehalwans' from several places including Sangli, Kolhapur, Solapur in Maharashtra, Bijapur, Davanagere, Ranebennur, Bellary districts participated in the matches here.
