CHENNAI: A gang armed with deadly weapons attacked a couple at their house in Guindy on Sunday morning. The victims are admitted to a hospital and are said to be out of danger. Sources with the Guindy police said the attack took place around 7.45 a.m. when Bose (55) and his wife Bhagyam (50) were at their residence on Gandhi Street in Kamarajapuram. Four men came in a car and attacked the couple with sickles and knives and fled. Neighbours who came to the aid of the victims, took them to the Government General Hospital where they are undergoing treatment, police added. Police sources said the couple were the parents-in-law of a TNEB official who was murdered near Tiruvallur in July. A woman head constable attached to Vadapalani AWPS is among those arrested in connection with the murder. The couple are the complainants in the case, sources added. Man dies A 47-year-old man died after he got into a manhole to clean the sewer outside a restaurant on Khader Nawaz Khan Road, Nungambakkam, on Saturday afternoon. Thousand Lights police said Athinarayanan (47) and Kuppananthan (40), both from Pudupet, had lowered themselves into a manhole and tried to clear the block in the drainage. Both the men lost balance and struggled to come out. Onlookers managed to pull Kuppananthan out. Athinarayanan was drowned. His body was recovered and sent for post-mortem to the Government Royapettah Hospital. The report is awaited to ascertain whether Athinarayanan died of asphyxiation, police sources added. Valuables stolen Over Rs.70,000 cash, jewellery weighing five sovereign and three mobile phones were allegedly stolen from a car in Panaiyur on Saturday. Unidentified men stole the valuables from the car of Mohammad Ali of Perumbakkam, at Panaiyur beach.
